I think orchestra is great!

The only reason I did band is that when I was in school I was a terrible child- really awful- I spent the rest of my life appologizing to my parents for what I did when I was a freshman and sophomore. But I had friends all over the school, and the band kids were just SO nice and so good- I found them quaint and naive at the time, but when you are a parent quaint and naive starts to look really really good, when you can translate that to "not doing drugs, not binge drinking and not getting pregnant".

So when my husband and I talked about kids, I said- "They all have to play band instruments and be in band." And my husband said "ok". So in second grade they each started private music lessons, and by 5th grade they were in band- my first daughter on the flute, my son and my second daughter on clarinet. It was one of the best decisions I've made :-) I have to say, band kids are still fabulous.

I think you could say the same about drama, or orchestra or anything else (other than football, baseball and basketball- which are the "party" sports). Does that make sense? I think Orchestra is great- and if your boys are busy with other things, that's enough. It's the load of acitivities (safe activities that they like) that is important. If there is too much free time with girlfriends or boyfriends, or there are too many parties on the menu- you run in to problems- imo. It's just a matter of opportunity combined with the ridiculous retardation induced by too many hormones.
