"I think you could say the same about drama, or orchestra or anything else (other than football, baseball and basketball- which are the "party" sports). Does that make sense?"

I find myself agreeing with you and wondering why.

Despite my tendency to agree with you, however, I feel compelled to defend participation in the "party sports."

I still remember the smell of the freshly cut grass on a football evening and the excitement of going head to head with a bunch of strangers. I wasn't much of a team player, not even a little bit, but I loved the contact.

The game provided a real outlet to passions and energies that I didn't understood and it was much safer than the alternative; street fights with hard looking men.

Anyway the point of this rambling post is that if someone has a kid who can't walk past a ball without picking it up or kicking it, I don't think they should spend too much time trying to get that kid out of sports and into one of the other activities. For those ball-fascinated kids sports will be their main interest and any organized activity is undoubtedly much preferable to having a kid sitting around wondering what exciting things they can get into on a dull day.
