Alaska schools teach sex education the same way most states do and do not limit such education to abstinence teaching. So Bristol Palin isn't pregnant because no one taught her about condoms..

BTW condoms have a practical failure rate of as much as 12% anyway. That is, a couple who uses condoms for a year have a 12% chance of getting pregnant. Both material condom failure and human user failure is involved.

When we calculate the failure rate for condoms, we look at the pregnancy rate per year that occurs in couples who use condoms. For latex condoms, the typical failure rate is about 12%. However, if condoms are used every time and used correctly every time , the failure rate falls to approximately 2 to 3%. Even when condoms are used perfectly, there is still a 2 to 3% failure rate, since condoms will sometimes break, even when used correctly.

Just some facts to bear in mind when you hear nonsense about abstinence vs reliance on condoms. Of course, a couple not using condoms or any birth control methods at all won't have a 100% chance of pregnancy within a year, so the above calculated failure rate is understated. The 12% practical failure rate should be compared to 85% - the chance of a couple getting pregnant in a year with no birth control at all.

I also think the failure rate for STD transmission should be higher than the failure rate for pregnancy. Human women aren't fertile 100% of the time, but STD transmission is possible 100% of the time. My conclusion is practically speaking, a sexually active person who regularly has sex with a person or persons with an STD is going to get a STD eventually even relying on condoms. I think sex education in schools should stress that there is no ironclad protection method out there. Except for a combination of abstinence and monogamy, of course. And sure, even abstinence has a practical "failure rate" thats caused by the same thing that makes the practical condom failure rate higher than the ideal rate of 2-3%. People just aren't perfect.
