According to Qualcomm, it will receive royalties on three categories of CDMA equipment: 1) Infrastructure equipment; 2) Subscriber equipment; and 3) ASICs. Qualcomm has licensed as of 8/8/95 Alps Electric, AT&T, Hyundai Electronics, LGIC, Maxon Electronics, Mitsubishi, Motorola, NEC, NOKIA Mobile Phones, OKI Electric, Matsushita (Panasonic), Samsung Electronics, SANYO Electric and Toshiba to manufacture and sell CDMA subscriber equipment. It has also licensed several manufacturers to make and sell infrastructure equipment. It has licensed VLSI and DSP to manufacture and sell ASICs (see qualcomm.com and qualcomm.com ). Qualcomm will manufacture and sell all three categories of equipment itself as well. For the infrastructure and subscriber equipment the licensees will need ASICs which they can either acquire from Qualcomm or from Qualcomm's ASIC licensees (VLSI or DSP). If the infrastructure and subscriber equipment licensees choose to buy from DSP or VLSI, then Qualcomm will receive 2 royalty payments for essentially one piece of infrastructure or subscriber equipment sold. Qualcomm will receive a royalty from the infrastructure or subscriber equipment manufacturer and will receive a royalty from DSP or VLSI for the ASIC sold to the manufacturer that was incorporated into the equipment. Or, the infrastructure and subscriber equipment manufacturers can buy the ASICs directly from Qualcomm.
