Yup, the Maverick is back! John McCain is running a Sarkozy campaign! Vive l'Americain!

I just heard Olbermann and Matthews praise McCain's speech. Chris Matthews spoke of McCain "confessing" to Republican failures and predicted that he will be ahead in the polls by next week. I'm still slack-jawed at that prediction, not the prediction (which I agree with) but the source.

I thought John McCain's speech was excellent. He'll never be a great speech giver but it was honest and moving, particularly when he spoke of his imprisonment, including a description of the cocky, brawling fighter pilot he had been before his capture, his having to learn dependence on others the hard way, his shame when he broke. The hall seemed perfectly silent at that moment. The crowd was ready to cheer at anything, but by the end he really had them in hand. Immense love of country on display.

McCain's message: if you want REAL bipartisan change, real reform, here is your ticket.

I'm sure the Europeans are ready to despair of us, such unabashed nationalism.
