I see him him as an honest, steadfast footsoldier, possibly even a tactician, but I don't see him as a strategist - certainly not in the way Reagan was. Reagan was able to formulate his ideas, create a movement and in the span of a quarter of a decade sell the country on it and lead it to the White house.

Reagan is an awfully high standard for anyone to be held to.

Reagan's quest to end the Cold War (as a route to curtailing nuclear proliferation) dated to early 60s, and it was his principal focus on a daily basis until the day he left office. And that, of course, is why he was able to make it happen.

I think few people on earth have that kind of focus and commitment, and Reagan also had to choose between two of his major objectives -- budget control and ending the Cold War -- and he chose the more important of the two.

The difficult task facing the next Republican president is to try to stop the Left from continuing its anti-Americanism. Literally, the Left has chosen its ideology over its commitment to the national interest, and if this is not stopped soon it could develop an inertia which is unstoppable. A Reagan would be great, but they are few and far between. A McCain does have a shot at it.

Obama is a problem because he is so extreme and most of the country doesn't want to go there with him.
