I think the recent strength in the dollar reflects confidence in the American political process, which is much more open and regulated than what goes on in most of the world. Of course, there is also uneasiness with European economies; a fear that the rise in commodity prices has been a bubble; the apparent improvement of the Iraq situation; the weakness in the price of oil and natural gas from (temporarily) adequate supplies; a respect for American military power; and just pure speculation that the long decline in the dollar is now over.
