We don't have a national sales tax now.

On some stuff we do... usually called excise tax. But not much different than sales tax.

I'm personally against a national sales tax. But they could have a very low income tax, say 5%, and a sales tax, say 15%, that would keep the average liability the same. Not sure why you would object to that if you think a consumption tax is more equitable.
