"In looking at polling data, the majority of Americans think the surge has either made things worse in Iraq or has had no impact.

The majority of Americans also:

oppose the Iraq war
think it was a mistake
think it was not worth fighting
think the troops should be withdrawn within two years or sooner, regardless of how things are going in Iraq
think the more responsible decision is to withdraw the troops soon, rather than remain in Iraq until the situation becomes more stable
think Democrats are more likely to make the right decisions about Iraq
think the Iraq war has had a negative effect on life in the U.S.
think the expense of the Iraq war is partially responsible for our current economic problems
disapprove of the way Bush is handling the war in Iraq
don’t think the Democrats in Congress have gone far enough in opposing the Iraq war
don’t think things are going well in Iraq
don’t think the U.S. is making significant progress in Iraq
don’t believe the “war on terror” requires “victory” in Iraq (whatever that even means)
don’t think the Iraq war has made the U.S. safer from terrorism
don’t think removing Saddam Hussein from power was worth the casualties and financial cost of the war
Even if McCain can convince Americans that Obama was wrong to oppose the surge, the fact remains that the majority of Americans believe that Obama was right to oppose the WAR and that McCain was wrong to support it. To state the painfully obvious, had we not gone to war in Iraq we wouldn’t even be talking about the surge. This makes McCain’s whole “surge” argument moot. He’s clearly grasping at straws. But you knew that already, and McCain must know it too."
