Paul; Does each of those players have 100% of their market? I suspect not, although there are probably some uniqure products.
Regarding copycat devices, I suspect that the AMD and Cyrix chips hold very little copied from Intel, but merely run the same code. We could also say that GM was a Ford copy cat as well.
Once a technology matures other areas than mere copying come into play, and it is quite possible for the market originator to get left in the dust. Like IBM.(Of course IBM only originated the aggregation and set the priginal standard)
In addition it is Microsoft that defines their and Intels market. Whatever they make must run Gatescode. What would happen if Intel put a hard wired java engine into a new product along with the usual x86(?, how?, look up table of routines, or a java branch?, not my field) Would MS then follow?

All markets have leaders, and to suggest that all but the leaders exit would soon have us paying through the nose for every item we purchased.

So I am quite content to have AMD Cyrix et al out there trying harder.

Bill
