<<Question: who needs an OC-48 switch? I've heard that most switched networks
can't even "drive" or "saturate" an OC-48 port, so it's like overkill
or something.>>

Not at all. Some telcos will be using OC-48 as early as next year.
It can take a while to certify products, so the capability now
is timely. This link speaks to that and also more on Navis management
software, which is answer to another of your questions below.

<<Is this OC-48 capability shipping or is it vaporware?>>

Shipping 1Q98.

<<And I keep hearing that ASND/Casc. is clueless about voice...>>

<<And I keep hearing about quality issues (eg "Crashcade")...>>

There WERE severe software issues with MAX TNT in Q2 and Q3. These
are now resolved (per CEO) and customers are now accepting and
certifying the TNT.

<<Why did NN win big ATM backbone contracts with BT, MCI, Stentor
and rumore others if ASND's switch is better?>>

The GX-550 was announced this month and ships 1Q 98.

<<Why did NTT go with ASND frame relay instead of ASND ATM?>>

Actually NTT went with both. And this was before GX-550 was announced,
although I'm sure NTT knew all about it.

<<Does ASND have comprehensive network management software that's competitive
with NN and NT's strong offerings?>>

I don't know what NN or NT have. ASND has Navis, which is a strong
product.

"Network Management/NAVIS - The NAVIS demo is essentially two demos in one
dedicated to the management tools used by ISPs and enterprise markets
(NavisAccess) and the tools used to manage the core switching products
(NavisXtend)."

Can ASND cover ALL the bases: access, edge AND core switching?

Yes.
