Mixed Picture of a House Divided and a Hint of Redemption For Rice and Hadley

The latest insider fueled installment of the Bush White House, Bob Woodward's "The War Within: A Secret White House History, 2006-2008" paints a picture of a "detached" president whose Defense Department fed a "fable" of overconfident data during a time when the war in Iraq was in shambles.

The "book", to be released September 8 comes at an interesting time during the election cycle, and features the usual gaggle of "on the record" interviews with key administration officials, including President Bush, National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.

According to The Washington Post, the book credits the improvement in the war in Iraq, not so much on the troop surge strategy, but on new state of the art spying techniques that allowed the U.S. to listen in on key conversations of Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki. "his staff and others in the Iraqi government", as well as '"groundbreaking" new covert techniques enabled U.S. military and intelligence officials to locate, target and kill insurgent leaders and key individuals in extremist groups such as al-Qaeda in Iraq.'... "
