Like Grant, Eisenhower did not brag.

John Kennedy made his WWII heroics a centerpiece in each of his political campaigns. Given the closeness of the 1960 election, you could argue that he never would have been elected president without touting his wartime experience.

As for Dwight Eisenhower, I’m sure that he made the case that his experience trumped Adlai Stevenson’s experience, though I doubt that he took a shot at Illinois, which in those days was still competitive politically. Eisenhower was successful in tagging him with the “egghead” label, an intellectual elitist out of touch with the common man.

Stevenson is still well regarded in Illinois. If nothing else, he was an honest man, a distinction not shared by many Illinois politicians. In my lifetime, four ex-Illinois governors have been indicted for various crimes. Three of them were convicted and sent to jail. The current governor, Rod Blagojevich, is well on his way to incarceration.
