Oh, I agree. But the difference between today and 5 years from now will be that most major car companies will have an electric car offering. Electric cars will still be around 1% of sales or maybe less, but the very fact that most major car companies will have them on the road will mean that economies of scale are working their magic. That will drive costs down, which will finally make wide scale EVs at a reasonable cost a true possibility. That is the day I've been looking forward to for a long time, because transportation represents 70% of our oil usage.

Cars like the Tesla Roadster are great, but electric cars from Toyota and GM, priced to sell to middle America, are what really gets me excited.

If 20 years from now, we can have the majority of our cars using an energy source other than oil, then this country will have set itself up for economic prosperity for a long time to come and our worst enemies will be deprived of hundreds of billions of dollars to do their mischief with. Then wars like Iraq and or CIA ops such as in Georgia, all to secure our oil supplies, will no longer be necessary.
