In August 2005 while gearing up for his run, he realised that he needed to get the religious right on his side if he was going to have a prayer of a chance, so he made a statement backing the teaching of Intelligent Design in public schools.

As for his own beliefs, he was one of those who went on record as accepting evolution when that question was famously asked early in the Rep primary debates. He has fallen for the "teach the controversy" BS that creationism has morphed into in the USA, as a wedge to sow FUD about biological science. That is the current approach that they hope can withstand federal courts. After all, who can argue against "academic freedom" and "exposing students to different viewpoints"? Of course the same individuals that would welcome their kids being exposed to "flaws in evolution" would be most unhappy if the kids were exposed to Gaian "science" as well, which is LOL funny, because as science, certain aspects of Gaianism qualify as science whereas creationism does not.
