but in some ways I think just as "Only Nixon could go to China"- it is perhaps true that only a progressive can take on the teacher's unions.

I agree with this, but while his rhetoric occasionally suggests a willingness to do this, nothing in his record demonstrates that he is willing to stand up to the party base.

OTOH, you have McCain....who has fallen all over himself to please the base right now but has a long record of standing up to the party.

Not exactly a clear cut choice, though I'll say that both are more likely to have this quality than the candidates in either of the last two elections.
