Sarah Palin will help McCain is some quarters, but hurt him in others. I think she's motivating more Democrats to get out and vote, since her views are rather extreme. But there's no doubt that she's also energizing the base of the Republican party, and will likely help in some rural areas. All in all, VPs usually don't affect the electoral map very much, and I doubt this year will be much different. Perhaps Palin will help McCain in states like CO and NV. But it's hard to say how it will wash out overall; there are some conservative men that will not vote for a women. I noticed Bob Barr (L) is running pretty strong in some southern states, 3 or 4%. I think Barr will pick up votes from McCain as a result of the Palin VP nomination, perhaps enough in states like VA and OH to swing them to Obama.
