Murder is a word- it is defined legally as the unlawful killing of a human being, so yes, if the state says it isn't murder, it isn't.

Some use the word to mean killing they would not like (or think is against "God"- pick a God, any God), but that's so subjective I find it worthless.

So I don't see it as a cop out. It's simply paying attention to words and what they mean. Murder is a formal word. "Killing that makes me feel uncomfortable" is what people often mean when they use it, but really, that definition is the real cop out- since everyone will have different standards for "barbarous" and "inhumane".

Likes and dislikes, imo, include your subjective beliefs about what some invisible deity tells you to do- regardless of the deity involved. If the deity can't show him or herself, and actually make the case, I subsume the caveats expressed by humans regarding the invisible deity as "likes and dislikes".
