but imo asking the non-religious to respect folks consigning them to hell under the banner of

Other than a few public evangelical type preachers, like a Jerry Falwell or Pat Roberts, your statement is an overstatement, I think, and a throwback to theological practices in prior centuries.

As for the Bible itself, I can't think of any scriptures that consign people who lack faith to Hell. The 'wages of sin' are identified and particularly in the OT, sin bringing down the wrath of God is stated.

The New Testament focuses mostly on the benefits and empowerment a relationship with God brings. Nothing in the way of punishments pops into my mind, but I'm intrigued now and will research a little this evening.

I have to leave now for the rest of the day, but also wanted to say the those Left Behind books are mostly fiction or really really tortured scriptures. Unfortunately, there are many lazy Christians who have let their theology be shaped by those books. They were very popular with evangelicals. But the evangelicals I know well think they are drivel for the most part.
