"How the Bush Administration Underestimated Nouri al-Maliki"

"Signs that the Iraqi PM's stance on U.S. withdrawal is hardening is undermining Bush's plan for indefinite occupation."

alternet.org

According to this account, and its worth reading for its POV, a lot of what has occurred and been described as success in Iraq the last couple of years has had to do with coordination between Al-Maliki, Sadr and Iran often done to hinder US Military efforts. Secret meetings with Iranian leaders in the Green zone are claimed.

Now Al-Maliki is insisting that US forces be completely gone by 2011 or possibly earlier. This has taken Bush completely by surprise - which in turn casts some doubt on Woodward's claim that the CIA hears everything Al-Maliki says.

Its going to get interesting - Bush and the Pentagon don't want to leave but the legal basis for US occupation is quickly running out by December 31, 2008. Ironically Bush may end up going hat in hand to Russia - a permanent member of the security council - to approve its continued "legal" occupation of Iraq!

This is a huge story - it could very well be the whole effort in Iraq has essentially been for naught or that it officially becomes an illegal occupation very soon - I just don't understand why the "liberal" media isn't all over it. Factor Al-Maliki's coordination with Iran and its serious stuff.

I don't think the media is really that liberal and Bush hating - incompetent maybe a better description. Then you have the right wing media claiming the surge a massive success but thats questionable if the above article is even partially true.
