I understand the abstraction you describe. It's an interesting way to look at it. Maybe it's simpler than that, though. If you watch CSI on TV, you see scientists whose job it is to find the truth, as we're frequently reminded by Grissom. That's pure science. But they're also law enforcement officials who naturally want to get criminals off the street. It's just human. Pure economics has one kind of appeal but applying it to improve the world also has appeal. Of course, some people get jobs as theoretical economists and others as applied economists. Folks should remember what it is that they get paid for. That applies to lots of jobs. I know that it applies to civil servants, who have different kinds of conflicts. It seems to me that it's appropriate for applied economists to, well, apply, which might involve a bit of spin. Fraud is another matter. All professionals, whether or not they are regulated, have integrity obligations. Some are dishonorable. Others just seem to forget about those obligations.
