John - Re:" They have to venture into manufacturing other computer components and develope new computer uses/applications, which isn't a traditional Intel "core competency".
Don't forget - Intel has 80% or more of the independent software developers helping out with new development.
Picture the automobile industry in the 1950's. The auto manufacturers were reaching record production levels, and everyone had a car in his/her garage. What happened next?
The interstate highway system exploded ("new software" to run the hardware on), all new houses were built with TWO garages, families jumped to two or more cars/family, etc.
This was not a smooth ramp, as we all know, but the the major auto manufacturers have grown enormously. They of course ingrained in people's minds that higher profits will come with higher priced models in the next (and every) new car year. PC/technology doesn't have that benefit.
Imagine new cars equipped with PCs so that travelers have one integrated option for CD players, Internet access, cell-phones, voice mail, fax, GPS locators, engine diagnostics, climate control, etc. One day this will happen and 10 - 15 million new PCs/year will be sold into this category.
