Haim, I think Russia is backing down. S.Osetian and Abhasians were practically independent (or Russian) for over 15 years.
They destroyed Georgian army and stopped their appetite to incorporate them.
Long term will be interesting to see if history repeats itself and energy will become so cheap to bankrupt them.
I have hard time to see it since demand is so much different today, as compared to 1980th.
