She was leaking amniotic fluid. That means her membrane was broken. That often triggers labor, although maybe not immediately. In addition, that means that bacteria can become a problem. Both risks become greater the longer you wait.

Yes, there are some risks, but "leak" is not full rapture. And some women are in actual labor for more than a day. Palin was not in labor. Based on the article, she still wasn't in labor at the time she arrived to her preferred destination. Labor had to be induced.

A woman who already delivered 4 babies has some idea what is going on and what to expect.

Besides, women have delivered babies in caves for millennia. Any place she traveled was much more sterile than a cave.
