I don’t think there’s any misstatement in what you posted: taxpayers will indeed be on the hook for some of the losses stemming from FNM’s and FRE’s misdeeds.

Moreover, taxpayers have already had to bail out such firms as Bear Stearns, who probably wouldn’t have needed assistance in the first place were it not for the general credit crisis in which FNM and FRE played a leading role.

I think it would be more apt to say that Democrat shills pounced on the “misstatement.” Sort of changes of the tenor of the report, eh?
