Apparently people really need them to explain the unknown. Maybe....maybe not. I rather believe throughout history people have experienced God first in a powerful, visceral, epiphany type event and THEN tried to define it, understand it, and stay in contact with it. From this flowed the organization of a sort of body politic complete with rules, rituals and sacred rites. This emotional experience, or 'born again' as evangelicals call it, is still today the starting point for most people's life as a religious, especially true for converts. Following this, the individual will usually scour the scriptures and other religious literature to try and make sense of their experience or to find out what they should do next.
