Rumination #1:

To the extent early birds are, by definition, exceptionally well capitalized and dominant firms, these same firms may tend to go for best-of-breed approaches, rather than integrated suppliers like AMAT, because they can afford the luxury of not becoming dependant on a single supplier.

Rumination #2:

If Intel and IBM are no longer willing to pioneer the transition as a result of their learning process, why should any firm step up to the plate to be first while significant perceived latecomer advantages exist?
