Smears on Kerry are relevant. Making fun of his appearance is a distraction for example. I saw the batman and robin jokes and stuff; those are smears but not serious ones. I didn't think his VietNam Vets against the war stuff was relevant or that Bush's partying in college was relevant. I was young at that time and excuse all of that stuff as irrelevant youthful exuberance having little to do with what the men represent now. Kerry made his service record relevant, however, when he brought it to the stage as evidence of his qualifications.

I'm not really sure what you are counting as a smear. He definitely biffed some stuff.
