Rotten fundamentals and kitchen finances. <G>

As a way out, the US govt increases its spending on credit
card, lowers its income (taxes). Your typical family would
go broke (deflation), but US treasury has the printing press,
so the dollar will continue to be devalued until new policies
are implemented. Also, expect extreme manipulation when the
system is about to fail. We are there - the next crisis
after Fannie and Freddie is for US government bonds. The
bailout was very bearish fundamentally for US sovereign debt
and the dollar. However, we've got announced G7 intervention
in March and announced US intervention in July (in the
currency markets)

Gold got killed, but so it did many times since the secular
rise started in 2001-2002.

Currency markets cannot be controlled for long (I think),
except through monetary policy, such as that of Volcker.
