As for beating unruly kids, I say just throw them out at some point instead of allowing them to terrorize their teachers grade after grade.

And when we throw them out, where do they go? If they become criminals, are we happy with the resultant rise in GNP?: more cops, more lawyers, more prisons. The option of "Throwing them out" - as tempting as it might be - should recognize that there is really no 'out': society pays the bill at some other point in their lives.

Having said that, let me report that I was a long-term substitute in a 'good' public school (I took a year off after undergrad). Needless to say, I did not get the gifted classes. I can honestly report that in the classes where behavior was a real problem, it was due to the behavior of a few especially disruptive kids. I kept playing 'send-send back' with the vice principle to get a brief respite for the sake of the other kids. I was so angry with these bast**ds (the kids) - they were destroying the chance for these other kids in the class to learn.
