re: "Following a record rate of ice loss through the month of August, Arctic sea ice extent already stands as the second-lowest on record, further reinforcing conclusions that the Arctic sea ice cover is in a long-term state of decline,"

You realize of course, that this statement needs to be put in to context. In May of this year, (maybe the same) scientists were projecting that minimum area of summer arctic ice would be LESS than 2007 (The University of Colorado-Boulder's Arctic Regional Ice Forecasting System group). The fact that some of the thin, new ice (new arctic ice formed during the winter of 2007) still survives and may form thicker multiyear ice is something of a surprise. Earlier in the year, scientists predicted that the new Arctic winter ice would melted (because it was so thin), and more old Arctic ice would melt - resulting in a new record of minimum Arctic ice coverage. Summer's not over, but 2nd lowest this is good news...right?
