The real tactic of Karl Rove is becoming clear, and to no surprise it is really just the same tactic he has always used.

From Bush Jr's first campaign, where Karl held a big press conference to declare he was being bugged by himself, the main Rove tactic has been to create a spectacle so big and transparent and outrageous that is draws all the attention away from the actual election. He calls this tactic "Sucking the oxygen out of the room". Palin is currently the one doing the sucking.

You remember some of his last greatest stunts:
- The "theft" of Bush Jr's debate preparations which were returned unopened by Gore.
- The "loss" of his Power Point presentation on the Iraq war rollout, which just happened to get left in front of a Democrat.
- The "leaking" of easily discredited copies of Bush Jr's National Guard records to Dan Rather.
- And don't forget the SwiftBoat campaign.

All of these had one thing in common. They were so transparently outrageous that they demanded a response from thinking people .... and that is exactly what Karl Rove was aiming for. So long as nobody was consentrating on important matters in the campaign. His tactic is designed to keep rolling out one manufactured train wreck after another as a distraction, and when that doesn't work he brings up abortion or gay marriage to fill the gaps. It will burn itself out, but maybe not for a couple of months.

It doesn't always work. It doesn't have to work. But it is important for the Obama campaign to realize that you can't counter a spectacle with calm and reason. Someone on the campaign has to find an outrage in the McCain camp. I suggest pointing out that he has been taking disability that he doesn't deserve or especially how senile he is. In effect, someone needs to bitch-slap him off the stage for a day or two. That will create a different spectacle, and an opportunity for Obama to supress this spectacle with calm and reason (Since it puts the Obama campaign in charge of the duration).
