I haven't been following the lipstick discussion. I get the problem with the "coon's age" remark. Its applicability as an analogy to the lipstick one you'll have to explain to me. That lipstick/pig expression is used so commonly among civil service wonks--I've sure used it to describe policy modification proposals--that it seems innocuous and inoffensive to me.
