I suspect it was simply another example of his disdain for alternate thought. It was right in there with his San Francisco guns and religion commentary. It is amazing what we see when we get a window into his mind. Such a nice image - such mean thoughts! It's what ALL the Left thinks about Republicans. Spend five minutes on DailyKos and you'll see. The evil of Republicans, those stooges of evil Big Corporations, is dogma to the Left, and needs no evidence. What Obama reveals with these comments is that he's a Leftist. It was an appeal to fellow Leftists - and was taken as such by the audience. It's a part of Leftism that he knows he should conceal, but he's spooked now and doesn't seem to help himself.
