McCain had already denounced the war, so his story that he refused to leave the prison because they wanted him to denounce it again is an obvious lie. No doubt his mind was manipulated with various good-jailer bad-jailer routines.

All of that is a sad and tragic story, but it's not a qualification for the Presidency. His cashing in on the story is an outright disqualification.
