The "lipstick on a pig" etc remark wouldn't have been perceived as offensive if it wasn't so obvious a response to Palin's well known remark about hockey Mom's, pitbulls and lipstick. If not for that, it would be just a reasonably well known and inocuous phrase. But she had made the "lipstick-pitbull" remark and is very widely known for the phrase and that changes things.

That was my reaction too. But the juxtaposition of these remarks is largely ignored by the lefty posters and media. They just focus on Obama's remarks and interpret them without the broader context of Palin's remark in St. Paul. Figures.
