McCain used it in a very different context, but it's still just a colloquialism. Obama's audience obviously made the connection with Palin's story and laughed like all get out.

You're making all sorts of unfounded assumptions about 'what I think.' You don't like it when I do that, so consider the possibility that I don't like it when you do it.

In today's political climate, politicians would do well to choose their words carefully. Without the 'hold on', 'aahhh', 'you know', and other delaying tactics that Obama and Hillary use. And, I'm quite sure, McCain and Palin do, although not so frequently.
