If more chip niches are becoming commodities, then margins will decline permanently, rather than just the temporary fluctuations due to the cycle, technology changes, and management decisions. There are so many variables that go into deciding margins at chip companies, I can't figure out what the trend is. I can think of examples of chip sectors that look more commoditized than 5 years ago, but is this an industry-wide trend?
