delayed flights would not have saved anybody.

No, delayed flights give the passengers the information that it is no use to cooperate with the hijackers, whenever they happen. If the four flights had all taken off at different times (very possible in midday), then perhaps only the first plane would have hit its target, the second crashed like Flight 93, and the third and fourth been grounded before they could take off.
