Some people want prestige, others want to actually do something, to achieve something. Just take a back-bencher like Obama. He has not achieved a single thing in 2 years in Senate (before he left it to campaign).

Its more prestigious because you have more influence on what happens nationally. And while Obama did not originate a ton of legislation, he did much more than nothing as your post suggests.

As for Palin, she's more about fluff and being present when the project is done while letting others do the heavy lifting.
