McCain has a consistent record of opposition to earmarks.
But, Snowshoe, here's the reality--earmarks are a tiny part of our budget. Even if they were eliminated entirely, it wouldn't put a dent in the deficit. Or, perhaps I should say, it would put only the smallest dent. It is a clever issue for McCain to make his "signature" issue, since they don't really have a permanaent constituency to offend (other of course than fellow politicians--not too many votes there), while the really big parts of the budget have correspondingly big constituencies.
"Reform" means very little here. You can put lipstick on... oh, nevermind, bite my tongue.
BTW, did you see the whole context in which Obama's remark was made? The only place I saw it was on Olbermann. It was actually very good. It was an off-the-cuff preface to his prepared remarks, and he made real Obama points. The clip that is usually shown loses its intelligence and decency in isolation. Obama modelled what he actually means by "changing the way politics is done", IMHO, in the entire piece. |
