The real point to it is that they allow McCain to pretend to be a "reformer" while he skirts the really tough issues.

And of course nearly everyone does skirt those issues. They are difficult. Although some of them aren't as difficult as they are made out to be, IMHO (especially a real solution to Social Security). Medicare and the health care system on the other hand... those are doozies. So are pension liabilities. If states were forced to actually follow GASB accounting standards, many--possibly most--of them would be bankrupt, since they would have to actually account for the medical and pension liabilities that have been built up over the years and are going to come due with a vengeance with the baby boomer retirements. Companies without unions just shed or change the liabilities. Public institutions will find that far more difficult to do.

Sorry for the stream of consciousness change of subject. But they all blend together to me--we are coming up to a financial tsunami and McCain/Palin pretend to be "reformers" talking about fixing a small storm.
