But maybe John has an opinion here, he is a frequent NYT (and their Op-Eds) reader.

Friedman actually leans left, but unlike the rest of the New York Times, he is not a partisan Democrat. That's why, even if I disagree with him more than I agree with him, his columns can be refreshing. His issues are not framed through the GOP vs. Dem arguments.
