---- DJ Bush: `Deeply Concerned' As Hurricane Ike Approaches Texas
OKLAHOMA CITY (AFP)--President George W. Bush said Friday he was "deeply concerned" about the threat Hurricane Ike posed to his adoptive home state of Texas and urged residents to heed official warnings.
"I am deeply concerned about Hurricane Ike. It is a major storm headed toward a large population center," he said during a stop in Texas's northern neighbor of Oklahoma as the monster storm bore down on the city of Houston.
"The federal government will not only help with the pre-storm strategy, but once this storm passes we'll be working with state and local authorities to help people recover as quickly as possible," he said.
He spoke as Ike, pushing a storm surge towering 25 feet or higher, churned towards Houston, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee amid a dire warning that those remaining in low-lying areas "face certain death."
Bush said he had discussed emergency response plans with Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Federal Emergency Management Agency head David Paulison on Friday, and spoken to Texas Gov. Rick Perry a day earlier.
"The state of Texas is preparing for this emergency," said the president. "I urge my fellow Texans to listen carefully to what the authorities are saying.
"I suspect there's going to be some Texans headed for Oklahoma. And I know that they're going to find good people up here who want to help them. And so I want to thank the citizens of Oklahoma for getting ready to help a Texan in need," said Bush, who has a ranch inland in tiny Crawford, Texas.
