The reason TI dumped NT is because they were replacing 500 Netware servers. 500 servers into the migration they were only 1/3 the way through. Microsoft does not have the horsepower or management tools to run a mission critical enterprise network. NT 4.0 is just 3.51 plus the Windows 95 interface and slightly better performane. It is still built on the LAN server / LAN manager products that have failed in the past. But take a mediocre product and add a huge marketing budget, and you will see some people try it. Those who are trying NT are returning to Novell in droves. For more info check out the Information Week article "NT Reality Check" that appeared in July 15, 1996 edition. Two huge showcase accounts for NT (Aetna and Cheveron) are returning to Novell.

When I refer to network infrastructure I am not talking about the hardware (ie. routers and hubs), I am talking about the infromation delivery systems that the hardware supports. If it is true that we now live in the information age, and that information will be distributed through Internet services, then the backbone of the system must be fast, secure, fault tolerant, and accessable/manageable through a directory.

Novell already has far and away the fastest system on the market. Novell provides the C2 red book compliant NETWORK operating system. Novell has the best dirctory services in the industry.

With releases due out next month for IntranetWare, GroupWise 5, and ManageWise, the whole product line refreshes. Novell is also starting an aggresive marketing campain targeted at CIOc and CEOs. As opposed to target IS managers as they have done in the past.
