Sam, on the issue of the press as McCain's base, something is going on that looks fascinating. As you know, many have not left the reservation but that folk like Joe Klein and other prominent ones have. And he'll pay a price for that.

But in the past two days both Chris Mathews and James Carville have asserted that McCain doesn't sign off on the views in his ads. He's, they say, a better person than that.

Well, I just watched a clip from The View. McCain is asked specifically about the pig lipstick quote and the sex ed quote. He says those ads are truthful. When then asked by someone, I think it was Barbara Walters, how he could criticize Obama for saying the same thing he did when he (McCain) was criticizing Hillary Clinton's health care plan (a proposal by a woman), McCain said he only criticized the proposal, not the person. Which, again, is precisely what Obama did.

Lots of roosters can come home to roost. But Obama's folk are going to have to point the way for them. They can't count on the press to do it.
