I love the Mark II, was at the range yesterday with that gun - took my twin daughters (14 yrs old) to the range yesterday to shoot my Ruger compact Mark 77, stainless in .308 using those new reduced recoil loads. They shot at a 50 yrd target and one had a 1" group with two rounds and the other the holes were touching. I'd say they're deer ready now - as they have passed the safety class and found a rifle that doesn't scare them or hurt. Now we just need time in field and opportunity - I can say they were starting to get swayed away from hunting by friends until they saw Sarah Palin on the news and the history behind her - fashion, brains, beauty and a hunter. Nice! It was a perfect example of what I always tell them - don't let others define you.
