Microsoft down, Netscape up on Justice

SEATTLE, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp stock fell in heavy trading Monday after the U.S.Justice Department charged the software giant was violating its 1995 settlement of federal antitrust charges. The department, in its petition to the federal court, charged that Microsoft violated the 1995 pact by forcing personal computer makers to license and distribute the company's Internet Explorer browser as a condition of licensing Microsoft's Windows 95 software.
Microsoft, which had been up as much as three earlier in anticipation of its quarterly earnings announcement after the close, was down 4-1/8 at 128-1/8 on Nasdaq volume of nearly 10 million shares.
Microsoft rival Netscape Communications Corp (NSCP) was up 5-10/16 at 40-9/16 on volume of nearly five million shares.
