Altair Leases Centrifugal Jig to BHP Minerals International

CODY, Wyo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 20, 1997--Altair International Inc. (Alberta Stock Exchange: AIL; NASDAQ: ALTIF) -- Altair International Inc. today announced it has leased a Series 12-8 Altair Centrifugal Jig to BHP Minerals International Inc.

The Jig will be installed in BHP's worldwide minerals testing laboratory in Reno, Nevada.

Under the terms of the agreement, Altair has granted BHP a non-exclusive license for use of the Centrifugal Jig. Altair will deliver and set up the Centrifugal Jig and train BHP personnel to operate and conduct routine maintenance on the equipment. Further, Altair will also provide limited consulting on an ongoing basis.

''We expect BHP's extensive testing to further prove the Jig's ability to recover extremely fine, heavy particulate matter from both natural deposits and waste streams more effectively than traditional methods,'' said Dr. William Long, President of Altair International. ''BHP will be testing several minerals previously untested by Altair.'' The Series 12-8 Altair Centrifugal Jig designation describes a cylindrical screen 12'' in diameter and 8'' in height,
with all other Jig components correspondingly scaled. Its capacity in
concentrating applications is approximately 4 to 5 tons of solids per hour. In cleaning applications, the Jig processes approximately 1 to 2 tons of solids perhour. These figures are based on feed normally presented at a 20 to 35 percent slurry density.

Altair International is in the development stage of commercializing its state-of-the-art technology, the Centrifugal Jig, which recovers extremely fine, heavy particulate matter using a combination of a mechanical jig and centrifugal force. Potential applications include gold/mineral recovery, coal cleaning and environmental remediation. Altair is the 100 percent owner of a major titanium/zircon mineral deposit in Tennessee.
