About two thirds of families not only have a home but own it. Uh? You need to factor in what a mortgage is, and what being underwater on your mortgage means. Many people who actually did own their homes outright a decade or even more ago, are losing them now, because they mined the equity during the last boom, and now don't own their home. The 67% (or there abouts) is not owned, it is owned + bank owned.
